The Flight

The aircraft was a Lockheed 18-50 Lodestar, registered NC18199. It had originally been built for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and was later leased to National Airlines. The aircraft had accumulated about 1,798 hours of flying time by the date of the accident.

There were 15 people aboard:

The crew included Captain William Merrill Corry, First Officer William Hawley Conrad, and stewardess Ethel Katherine McCoy

Departure From Miami

The flight actually began on the evening of October 4, 1945, even though the accident occurred shortly after midnight on October 5.

Flight 16 departed Miami at approximately 9:12 p.m. The aircraft was already about one hour and 15 minutes behind schedule, partly because of delays involving the aircraft’s earlier operations. 

The first parts of the journey were completed normally.

The aircraft stopped at Fort Myers, then continued to Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and finally Tampa.

There were no major problems reported during these parts of the flight.

After refueling at Tampa, the aircraft prepared for the short final leg to Lakeland.

The Final Leg

Flight 16 left Tampa at approximately 12:45 a.m. on October 5.

The distance between Tampa and Lakeland was only about 33 miles, making this the final and relatively short part of the journey. The aircraft climbed to approximately 1,500 feet and proceeded toward Lakeland. 

At Lakeland, the weather report showed approximately nine miles of visibility, with scattered clouds around 500 feet. These conditions were not considered extremely poor, and the crew proceeded with the approach.

At about 12:58 a.m., when the aircraft was approximately seven miles from the airport, the pilots began a straight-in descent toward the northeastern runway.

At first, the approach appeared normal.

Unexpected Cloud

As the aircraft descended, the pilots encountered an unexpected cloud at approximately 600 feet.

This was an important moment in the accident.

The captain decided that the aircraft should not continue the approach under those conditions. He therefore began a missed approach, also known as a go-around.

A missed approach is a standard aviation procedure. If pilots cannot safely land, they increase engine power, configure the aircraft for climbing, and move away from the runway before attempting another approach or proceeding to another airport.

The decision to abandon an unsafe approach can save lives.

The Crash Into Lake Parker

Flight 16 passed approximately 1,000 feet beyond the end of the runway before striking Lake Parker.

The aircraft hit the water in a relatively level attitude. It then traveled farther across the surface of the lake before coming to rest in approximately 10 feet of water

The impact seriously damaged the aircraft.

The fuselage began to sink, creating a dangerous situation for the passengers and crew.

However, many people were able to escape from the aircraft.

The accident could have resulted in a much greater loss of life, but local people responded quickly and helped rescue survivors.

Rescue Operation

People inside had to escape from the damaged fuselage before it became completely submerged.

The Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar was a twin-engine aircraft developed in the late 1930s.

During World War II, many Lodestars were used for military purposes.

The aircraft involved in Flight 16 had been built for military service before being placed into commercial operations.

The Lodestar was capable of carrying passengers over domestic routes and was used by several airlines.
