Delhi Airport News: Rs 5.5 Crore Gold Seized from International Passenger

Delhi Airport News
A major gold smuggling case at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has placed the India–United States air travel corridor under increased security focus after customs officials seized gold worth nearly Rs 5.5 crore from a passenger arriving from abroad. The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over illegal gold trafficking through international flight routes and the challenges faced by airport security agencies in controlling such activities.
According to customs officials, the accused passenger was intercepted during a routine security and baggage screening process at Terminal 3 of Delhi Airport. Authorities reportedly became suspicious after irregularities were noticed during the passenger’s movement and scanning procedures. A detailed search later led to the recovery of a large quantity of concealed gold bars hidden inside specially modified clothing, including belts and pockets designed to avoid detection.
Officials stated that the seized gold weighed several kilograms and was being transported without proper declaration, violating provisions under the Customs Act. The passenger was immediately detained, and authorities launched a wider investigation to determine whether the case is connected to an organized international smuggling network operating through global aviation routes.
The incident has drawn attention because of the increasing misuse of international travel routes, especially between India and the United States, for carrying undeclared gold and luxury items. Aviation and security experts believe rising gold prices, high import duties, and strong domestic demand in India continue to encourage smuggling attempts despite tighter airport surveillance and advanced screening technology.
Delhi Airport, one of India’s busiest international aviation hubs, handles millions of passengers every year from destinations across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Customs authorities have intensified monitoring of high-risk routes and suspicious passenger behaviour to prevent illegal imports and financial crimes. Officials are also considering additional security measures for international arrivals in response to recent smuggling cases.
Authorities have advised international travellers to strictly follow customs declaration rules while carrying gold, jewellery, luxury goods, foreign currency, or other expensive items into India. Passengers are required to declare valuables beyond the permitted limit and maintain proper invoices or supporting documents to avoid penalties, confiscation, or legal action.
Under Indian customs regulations, passengers returning from abroad are allowed to carry limited quantities of gold jewellery duty-free under specific conditions. However, undeclared gold bars, concealed valuables, or items carried in quantities beyond the permitted limit can lead to arrest and prosecution under customs laws.
The latest seizure highlights the growing sophistication of smuggling methods being used on international flight routes. Experts believe airport security checks at major Indian airports could become even stricter in the coming months as authorities work to crack down on organized smuggling operations and strengthen aviation security across international travel corridors.
