According to the Customs department, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted the two passengers based on passenger profiling. During a personal search, officials found that both individuals were allegedly carrying gold concealed in their rectums.
The male passenger was found carrying two solid masses wrapped in rubber pouches, while the female passenger was allegedly carrying several gold pellets wrapped in adhesive tape. The concealed items were recovered during further examination by Customs officials.
Authorities subsequently examined the recovered material and found that it consisted of cut pieces of gold bars. The total weight of the seized gold was 1,967 grams, or approximately 1.967 kg. An assayer certified the recovered metal as 24-carat gold.
The Customs department valued the seized gold at approximately Rs 2.65 crore, making the recovery a significant interception at the airport. The contraband was seized by Customs officials as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged smuggling attempt.
Both passengers were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, following the recovery. They were subsequently produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
