Newly founded Liebherr company breaks ground

The groundbreaking ceremony for Liebherr-Aerospace Technology (Shanghai) marks a significant milestone for Liebherr, one of the world’s top three landing gear suppliers with decades of technological leadership and manufacturing expertise. The new facility underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening its local presence in China while supporting its long-term partnership with COMAC and the country’s domestically developed C919 passenger aircraft program.
Located in the northern section of Phase III of the Large Aircraft Industrial Park in the Lingang New Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the facility will cover approximately 16,000 square meters. Designed as a single-story steel-structured plant with a 30-meter span and a building height of 18.3 meters, the site will provide ample space for the precision manufacturing and assembly of large-scale aircraft components.

The Shanghai plant represents an important expansion of Liebherr’s global production network. It will establish local manufacturing capabilities for high-strength structural steel components used in aircraft landing gear systems, along with advanced surface treatment processes. By localizing production, Liebherr aims to reduce long-distance logistics and transportation costs for the C919 landing gear system while improving service efficiency and response times.
Once operational, the facility will serve as an integrated regional support hub, offering precision machining, advanced surface treatment, and on-site production support for COMAC’s C919 aircraft program. The project is also expected to contribute to the growth of the aviation manufacturing cluster in the Lingang New Area, further strengthening Shanghai’s position as a hub for high-end aerospace and equipment manufacturing.
With the successful groundbreaking ceremony, Liebherr-Aerospace has officially begun its localized manufacturing journey in Shanghai, reaffirming its commitment to delivering world-class aviation engineering and supporting the continued development of China’s aerospace industry.
