Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) in New Delhi have seized 869.5 grams of 24-carat gold from a passenger who allegedly tried to conceal the precious metal inside an electric scooter. The seizure was made at Terminal 1 of the airport on August 6, 2026.
The action was carried out by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) based on intelligence inputs and passenger profiling. Officials became suspicious during the screening of the passenger’s baggage and later carried out a detailed examination of an electric scooter.
According to the information available, the passenger was travelling with household goods and an electric scooter in his checked-in baggage. He had travelled from Jeddah to Mumbai before continuing to Delhi on IndiGo flight 6E 6133.
During the X-ray screening process, Customs officials noticed suspicious images in the passenger’s hand baggage and checked-in baggage. However, the passenger reportedly did not trigger an alarm while passing through the Door Frame Metal Detector.
Following the suspicious images detected during screening, Customs officials decided to conduct a detailed inspection of the electric scooter.
During the examination, officials discovered that gold had been hidden inside the solid cores of the scooter’s tyres.
Customs officials recovered 19 cut pieces of 24-carat gold from the tyres of the electric scooter.
The recovered gold had a total net weight of 869.5 grams. The precious metal was allegedly concealed in a way that made it difficult to detect during a normal security check.
The recovery highlights the methods sometimes used to conceal valuable items while attempting to move them through airports.
The Customs department has taken the recovered gold into custody and is investigating the case. Officials will examine the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s journey and the source and intended destination of the gold.
Investigators are also expected to look into how the gold was placed inside the scooter tyres and whether the passenger was acting alone or was connected to other people.
The seizure was made after the AIU used intelligence inputs and passenger profiling to identify a potential case of illegal gold transportation. The suspicious images seen during the X-ray screening helped officials decide to inspect the baggage more carefully.
The incident shows the role of advanced baggage screening and intelligence-led checks at airports. Even though the passenger did not trigger the metal detector, the X-ray screening raised concerns and led to a more detailed examination.
