Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is set to significantly boost its operational efficiency after receiving formal approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to implement mixed-mode runway operations. The approval was granted on November 3 following a detailed technical evaluation of the proposal submitted by airport operator Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).

In standard dual-runway setups, airports often dedicate one runway exclusively for arriving flights and the other solely for departing aircraft. Under a mixed-mode system, both parallel runways can be used flexibly for simultaneous arrivals and departures based on real-time traffic demand.

This dynamic air traffic management strategy allows controllers to optimize runway usage, minimize aircraft holding times in the air, and reduce taxi times on the ground.

The operational clearance brings several major advantages for Bengaluru’s fast-growing aviation hub:

  • 42% Capacity Surge: The airport’s approved handling capacity is projected to rise from roughly 60 aircraft movements per hour to 85 movements per hour.
  • Fewer Flight Delays: More flexible runway allocations will help eliminate bottlenecks during peak morning and evening travel hours.
  • Fuel Savings and Lower Emissions: Reduced airborne circling times and shorter ground taxi queues will cut jet fuel consumption, directly lowering carbon emissions.
  • Improved Scheduling Reliability: Airlines operating at KIA will gain greater flexibility to manage tight flight schedules and recover faster during adverse weather conditions.

As passenger volume and flight traffic continue to rise rapidly in South India’s economic hub, the transition to mixed-mode operations provides Kempegowda International Airport with the necessary infrastructure capacity to handle expanding domestic and international routes efficiently.
