A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold jewellery worth around Rs 60 lakh from the domestic cargo area of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. Police officials said the accused was caught following a tip-off.
The accused has been identified as Ram Avtar Sharma, a resident of Rajasthan. Personnel from the Airport Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate carried out the operation and intercepted him on Wednesday evening.
According to police, Sharma was stopped while he was riding a scooter out of the premises of the domestic cargo terminal. Acting on information received by the police, officers kept watch in the area and intercepted the accused. A search was then conducted, during which police recovered a large quantity of gold jewellery from his possession.
The seized jewellery weighed around 400 grams and included different types of ornaments such as necklaces, bangles and rings. Police estimated the market value of the recovered gold jewellery at approximately Rs 60 lakh. The seizure is significant because of the high value of the gold and the circumstances in which it was allegedly being transported from the airport premises.
Apart from the gold jewellery, police also recovered several hundred grams of silver from Sharma. The authorities have taken the recovered gold and silver into custody as part of the investigation. Police are now trying to establish where the jewellery came from and who was supposed to receive it. Preliminary investigation has indicated that the jewellery consignment was allegedly being transported towards Burrabazar, one of Kolkata’s major commercial areas.
Police are investigating the purpose of the consignment and the people who may be connected with it. Investigators are also expected to examine the accused’s travel details, communication records and other available evidence.
The authorities will also try to determine whether Sharma was acting alone or was part of a larger network involved in the illegal movement of gold and other valuable items. The arrest followed a tip-off received by the Airport Police Station. The police action highlights the importance of intelligence and surveillance around airport cargo areas.
