In a remarkable example of honesty and efficient airport operations, Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati successfully recovered and returned an unattended bag containing foreign currency worth more than ₹10.14 lakh to its rightful owner. The incident highlights the dedication and professionalism of airport staff and security personnel in ensuring passenger safety and the secure handling of lost belongings. The airport, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), managed to trace the passenger through coordinated efforts involving the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), airport authorities, and officials at Hyderabad Airport.
The incident took place on June 26, 2026, at Terminal 1 of LGBI Airport during routine security screening. While monitoring the Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), CISF personnel noticed an unattended bag that had been left behind after the security check.
Following standard airport security procedures, the CISF immediately secured the bag and handed it over to the airport’s Lost and Found team for further investigation. Airport officials carefully inspected the contents to identify the owner.During the inspection, the team found a significant amount of foreign currency inside the bag. It contained 10,720 US dollars and 175 Chinese yuan, along with medicines and several personal belongings.
The total value of the foreign currency was estimated at more than ₹10.14 lakh. Considering the large amount involved, airport officials treated the matter with utmost care and followed all necessary security protocols. The airport team found important clues inside the bag that helped them identify the owner. The passenger’s name was written on the bag, and the medicine strips inside also carried identifying information.
To further confirm ownership, airport authorities reviewed CCTV footage from the security screening area. The footage showed that the passenger had unknowingly left the bag behind after completing the security check and had already boarded a flight bound for Hyderabad. After confirming that the passenger had departed, the Lost and Found team quickly coordinated with the CISF and airport authorities at Hyderabad Airport. Together, they traced the passenger and verified ownership of the bag through proper identification procedures.
Once all verification formalities were completed, the bag was safely handed over to an authorised representative of the passenger, ensuring that all the belongings, including the foreign currency, were returned without any loss.
The successful recovery and return of the valuable bag reflects the strong security systems and passenger-focused approach followed at LGBI Airport. The quick response by CISF personnel and the efficient coordination between multiple airport teams prevented what could have been a major financial loss for the passenger. Airport officials said the incident demonstrates the importance of following standard operating procedures and maintaining constant vigilance during security screening.
LGBI Airport continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the leading airports in Northeast India. Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the airport has been expanding its facilities to provide better services to passengers.
Following the inauguration of its modern Terminal 2 in February 2026, the airport has significantly improved its infrastructure and passenger experience. The latest incident further highlights the airport’s commitment to safety, security, and customer service. The incident also serves as an important reminder for passengers to carefully check their belongings after completing airport security checks.
