Mumbai Airport News: Woman Arrested With 2.5 Kg Hydroponic Weed From Bangkok

Mumbai Airport News
Mumbai, August 17: Mumbai Airport Customs officials have arrested a 38-year-old woman from Nalasopara for allegedly smuggling hydroponic weed from Bangkok. The seizure was made at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMI) after customs officers acted on specific intelligence.
According to customs officials, the passenger, identified as S.Y. Pol, had arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok. She was intercepted by officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) after she crossed the green channel at the airport. The green channel is meant for passengers who do not have any goods that need to be declared to customs.
After stopping the passenger, the officers took her to the AIU office for a detailed examination. Her baggage was searched as part of the investigation. During the search, officials found two packets hidden inside her bag.
The two packets contained a total of 2,501 grams of hydroponic weed, also known as ganja. Customs officials said the substance is covered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Following the recovery, the woman was issued a summons and her statement was recorded by the customs authorities. During questioning, she reportedly admitted that she was aware that bringing cannabis and other illegal drugs into India could attract strict legal punishment.
The customs department subsequently arrested her in connection with the alleged smuggling attempt. Officials said the investigation is still at an early stage and more details are expected to emerge as the probe continues.
According to a customs official, the preliminary investigation and the statement of the accused indicate that other people may also be involved in the case. Authorities are now working to identify and trace those individuals.
Investigators are also trying to determine where the alleged contraband was sourced and who was supposed to receive it after the woman’s arrival in Mumbai. Officials are making efforts to identify and apprehend other suspected members of the drug network.
The seizure highlights the efforts of Mumbai Airport Customs and its Air Intelligence Unit to detect the illegal movement of narcotic substances through international air routes. Intelligence-based checks and detailed baggage examinations can help authorities identify suspected smuggling attempts.
The investigation into the case is continuing, and further action will depend on the evidence gathered by the customs authorities. The woman remains at the centre of the ongoing probe into the alleged smuggling of hydroponic weed from Bangkok.
