Guwahati Airport News: Approved as Export Point for Agarwood

Guwahati Airport News
The Centre has approved Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport as an official export point for agarwood chips and agarwood oil. The move is expected to make transport and trade easier for farmers and exporters in Assam and the Northeast.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal shared the news on social media on Saturday, October 31, 2026. He said the approval was given at the request of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Goyal called it a big relief for farmers, producers and exporters of agarwood, a product of which Assam is a leading producer. He said it was a major step forward in logistics for Assam and the Northeast because it brings potential international markets closer to the producers.
Welcoming the decision, Himanta Biswa Sarma said it would improve profits for farmers and simplify the logistics needed by businesses in this industry. He said agarwood has strong demand in international markets. He added that the state government will keep taking steps to make doing business easier and help Assam’s products compete across the world.
Before this approval, exporters may have faced extra steps and costs to send agarwood products out of the country. With Guwahati now an official export point, they can send their goods directly from the local airport. This can save time and money and make the process simpler.
The decision comes after Assam sent 123 kg of agarwood chips to Dubai in October. The state government described this shipment as a boost for the sector. The Chief Minister said it was an important step toward growing international markets for Assam’s traditional agarwood industry, which supports more than 50,000 farmers and workers.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Assam holds about 81 per cent of the country’s agarwood resources. Agarwood is a fragrant wood that forms in trees of the Aquilaria genus. It is widely used in perfumes, incense, essential oils and other traditional fragrance products.
