Customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport have seized suspected ganja worth around Rs 41.33 lakh from an Indian passenger who arrived from Bangkok.
The passenger landed in Delhi on IndiGo flight 6E 1054 and was intercepted during security checks at Terminal 3. Customs officials examined the passenger’s travel bags after stopping him for further checks.
According to the Customs department, the examination of the bags led to the recovery of four polythene pouches containing suspected ganja or marijuana. The recovered substance had a reported net weight of 1,181 grams and was valued at approximately Rs 41.33 lakh.
The four pouches were found during a detailed examination of the passenger’s baggage. Customs officials suspected that the substance was ganja, also known as marijuana.
The recovery was made after the passenger arrived from Bangkok, an international destination. The Customs department seized the substance for further legal action and investigation.
The case highlights the role of airport Customs teams in checking international passengers and their baggage for prohibited substances.
Following the seizure, the passenger was arrested under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
According to the Customs department’s statement, the passenger was arrested under Section 43(B) of the Act, while the suspected substance was seized under Section 43(A).
A separate case was also registered under Sections 8, 20, 23 and 29 of the NDPS Act.
The legal proceedings will determine the further course of action in the case. Authorities are also expected to investigate the source of the suspected ganja and the circumstances in which it was brought into India.
The Customs department is continuing its investigation into the seizure. Officials may examine the passenger’s travel details and other available information as part of the inquiry.
The investigation could also look into whether the passenger was carrying the substance for personal use or whether other individuals were involved in transporting it. The available information does not establish these details at this stage.
