The incident happened on September 4, when the three passengers travelled from Amritsar to Delhi and later boarded a Lufthansa flight from Delhi to Munich. According to Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, the passengers were wrongly directed to the international transfer area instead of completing the required immigration formalities.
The incident raised concerns about passenger movement and security procedures at one of India’s busiest airports.
The three Italian nationals first travelled from Amritsar to Delhi on an Air India flight. After reaching Delhi, they were scheduled to continue their journey to Munich on a Lufthansa flight.
However, they were reportedly allowed to proceed to the international transfer area without completing immigration checks at Delhi Airport.
The passengers subsequently boarded the Lufthansa flight to Munich. The lapse was later identified by the authorities, leading to an investigation into the procedures followed during their transfer.
Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that the Air India personnel responsible for escorting the passengers through the airport were found to be at fault.
According to the minister, the concerned staff members were immediately suspended after the incident was reviewed.
He also said that the lapses had been addressed and that a stronger system had been put in place to prevent similar incidents.
Following the incident, additional checks have reportedly been introduced at Delhi Airport. The aim is to ensure that passengers changing from domestic to international flights complete all required immigration procedures before entering the international departure area.
