The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has foiled an alleged gold smuggling attempt at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. A Bangladeshi passenger was intercepted after security personnel allegedly found gold hidden in three capsules inside his undergarments.
The passenger had arrived in Delhi from Jeddah and was scheduled to travel onward to Dhaka. During a detailed security check in the international transit area, CISF personnel noticed three capsules concealed in the passenger’s undergarments.
According to the information provided, the three capsules contained a chemical paste from which a total of 1.346 kg of gold was recovered.
The tariff value of the seized gold was assessed at approximately Rs 1.88 crore. The recovery was made after CISF personnel conducted further examination of the suspicious capsules.
The gold was allegedly being transported in a concealed form to avoid detection during the passenger’s journey through Delhi.
After the recovery, the passenger was handed over to Customs officials for further legal action.
Customs authorities seized the recovered gold under Section 110 of the Customs Act. The passenger was also arrested under Section 104 of the Act.
During questioning, the passenger allegedly told officials that the gold had been brought from Jeddah and was supposed to be handed over to another person in Delhi. He was travelling through Delhi as an international transit passenger before continuing his journey to Dhaka.
Customs officials have started a detailed investigation into the case. Authorities are trying to establish the source of the gold and identify the person who was allegedly supposed to receive it in Delhi.
Officials are also expected to examine whether other people were involved in transporting the gold and whether the passenger was part of a larger smuggling network.
The investigation will also focus on the passenger’s travel route and the circumstances in which the gold was brought from Jeddah.
The latest seizure comes after other cases involving valuable goods and suspected contraband were reported at Delhi’s IGI Airport.
Earlier this month, Customs officials seized a diamond-studded gold bracelet valued at more than Rs 1.07 crore in a separate case. The bracelet was recovered from two Turkish nationals who had arrived from Istanbul.
According to the information provided, the bracelet was made of 750-purity gold, weighed around 87.5 grams and contained approximately 10 grams of diamonds.
In another case, officials also seized around 15 kg of suspected marijuana, valued at approximately Rs 5.25 crore.
The latest incident highlights the role of security checks in identifying attempts to conceal valuable items. In this case, the suspected gold was allegedly hidden in capsules containing chemical paste and concealed in the passenger’s clothing.
The CISF and Customs teams are now investigating the case further. The final details about the alleged smuggling operation and the involvement of other individuals will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
