Delhi Airport News: Punjab Woman Held With 11.5 Kg Hydroponic Weed After Thailand Arrival

Delhi Airport News
New Delhi, August 18: Customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport have arrested a woman from Punjab and a man from Gujarat after allegedly recovering more than 11 kg of hydroponic weed from baggage. The seizure was made during an intelligence-based operation at the airport.
According to customs officials, the incident took place on August 16. The Air Intelligence Unit had developed information about a possible attempt to smuggle hydroponic weed into the country. Acting on the information, customs officers intercepted the Punjab woman after she arrived at Delhi airport from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok.
The woman had reportedly crossed the green channel and was not carrying any baggage with her. Customs officials then identified unclaimed baggage that was allegedly linked to her. The development raised suspicion among the officials, who continued to monitor the movement of the baggage.
A man from Gujarat, who had arrived separately from Kathmandu, was later intercepted when he allegedly came to collect the baggage. According to the customs statement, the two passengers had allegedly planned to use different travel routes to avoid detection.
The baggage was sent for X-ray screening, during which officials noticed suspicious images. A detailed physical examination was then carried out. Customs officers recovered 11.525 kg of hydroponic weed, also known as ganja, from the baggage.
Hydroponic weed is a type of cannabis grown using nutrient-rich water instead of traditional soil. It is often associated with controlled cultivation methods and can have high potency.
Officials said both passengers allegedly admitted their involvement in the smuggling attempt after they were intercepted. They were subsequently apprehended by the customs authorities.
The two accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is expected to focus on the source of the contraband, its intended destination and the wider network allegedly involved in the smuggling operation.
The case highlights the role of airport intelligence and passenger profiling in detecting attempts to transport prohibited substances through international airports. Customs officials continue to monitor international arrivals and baggage movements to prevent the illegal entry of narcotic substances into the country.
The recovery of more than 11.5 kg of suspected hydroponic weed at Delhi airport is a significant seizure. Authorities are now investigating the complete circumstances of the case and the alleged involvement of the two passengers.
