The new airport is scheduled to begin operations from August 17, marking a major change in air connectivity for Visakhapatnam and the surrounding region.
The existing Visakhapatnam Airport, which operates as a civil enclave at INS Dega, will cease scheduled commercial flight operations from 00:01 hours on August 17. The move follows a notification from the Ministry of Civil Aviation regarding the transfer of commercial operations to the new airport in Bhogapuram, located in Vizianagaram district.
The transition is expected to provide passengers with access to a modern airport facility designed to support the growing aviation requirements of the region. The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is being developed as a major aviation hub for North Andhra Pradesh.
Airlines have already started preparing for the transition. IndiGo, for instance, has announced that all its flights to and from Visakhapatnam will operate from the new airport beginning August 17.
The airport code VTZ, currently associated with Visakhapatnam Airport, will also be transferred to the new Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport. This will help maintain continuity for passengers and airline operations during the transition.
However, not every type of aviation activity will stop at the existing airport. Non-scheduled commercial operations, along with flights operated by the Indian Navy, Armed Forces, police and certain government or VIP aircraft, will continue under specified circumstances.
The shift marks a significant milestone in the development of aviation infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh and is expected to strengthen connectivity for Visakhapatnam and the wider North Andhra region.
