Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Plea on Renaming Navi Mumbai International Airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport News

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday refused to entertain a petition seeking directions to the Central government regarding the renaming of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The petition had requested the court to instruct the Centre to take a time-bound decision on a proposal submitted by the Maharashtra government. The proposal suggested renaming the airport as “Lokneta D B Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport.”

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, said the court was not inclined to interfere in the matter.

During the hearing, the bench observed that deciding the name of an airport falls under policy-making and administrative authority rather than judicial intervention.

“This will amount to indulging in policy making,” the bench reportedly stated while hearing arguments from the counsel representing Prakashjhot Samajik Sanstha, the petitioner organization in the case.

The court also questioned whether deciding the name of an airport was the responsibility of the judiciary. “Is it the function of the court that what should be the name of an airport?” the bench observed during the proceedings.

The petition had challenged an earlier decision of the Bombay High Court, which had dismissed a similar plea in November 2025.

While refusing to entertain the petition, the Supreme Court granted liberty to the petitioner to approach the competent authority through appropriate administrative channels if it wished to pursue the issue further.

The naming of the Navi Mumbai International Airport has remained a politically and emotionally sensitive issue in Maharashtra for several years. Different groups and political organizations have expressed varying opinions regarding the airport’s proposed name.

The Maharashtra government had earlier proposed naming the airport after Dinkar Balu Patil, popularly known as D B Patil, a well-known political and social leader from the Navi Mumbai region. Supporters of the proposal believe his contribution to local farmers and land rights movements deserves recognition through the airport naming.

At the same time, the issue has also witnessed political debates and public discussions, with different organizations seeking alternative naming proposals in the past.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is considered one of India’s most important upcoming infrastructure projects. The airport is being developed to reduce pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport and improve air connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Once operational, the airport is expected to significantly boost passenger handling capacity, cargo movement, regional connectivity, and economic development in Maharashtra.

Experts believe the airport will play a major role in supporting Mumbai’s growing aviation demand over the coming decades. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities and support commercial growth in Navi Mumbai and nearby areas.

The Supreme Court’s decision indicates that matters related to naming public infrastructure are generally considered policy decisions that should be handled by governments and administrative authorities rather than courts.

For now, the final decision regarding the official name of the airport remains pending before the appropriate government authorities.
