Mumbai Airport News: Terminal 1 Revamp from January 2027, Flight Shift on Hold

Mumbai Airport News
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is getting ready to redevelop Terminal 1 in phases. Work on the northern section of Terminal 1B is scheduled to begin in January 2027, as reported by The Times of India. At the same time, a plan to cut or shift international flights to Navi Mumbai has been put on hold.
The airport operator has cited safety concerns over the ageing structure of the terminal. These concerns have grown after a fire at Terminal 1 in April 2026. The redevelopment will be carried out in phases, starting with the northern section of Terminal 1B.
The plan to reduce international flights or move some of them to Navi Mumbai has been postponed. Airlines had objected to the proposal. After discussions between Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), airlines and government officials, the changes were deferred. A Reuters report published on October 13 said the airport will keep the existing airline slot allocations during the upcoming winter schedule. The planned international flight cuts from October 25 will not go ahead for now.
The redevelopment and the proposed flight changes are related, but they are not the same. The project is scheduled to begin in January 2027. The plan to reduce or shift international flights has only been postponed. Passengers should not assume that Terminal 1 will shut completely on October 25.
Travellers should rely on their airline’s latest notifications for any change in schedule or terminal. They should also follow official announcements from the airport. As the redevelopment plans and any related flight changes are finalised, more updates are expected.
The main questions are how the work in Terminal 1B will affect daily operations and whether some services will later move to Navi Mumbai. For now, flights continue as planned during the winter schedule.
