Bengaluru Airport Crosses Historic 400 Million Passenger Milestone

Bengaluru Airport News
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has achieved a historic milestone by crossing 400 million cumulative passengers since the airport began operations in 2008. The achievement highlights the airport’s rapid growth and its emergence as one of India’s most important aviation hubs for both domestic and international travel.
According to airport authorities, more than 44 million passengers travelled through Bengaluru Airport during the financial year 2025–26, reflecting strong growth in air travel demand. International passenger traffic witnessed a significant rise, while domestic travel also continued to expand steadily as Bengaluru strengthened its position as a major technology and business destination.
Officials said the airport’s success has been driven by Bengaluru’s growing global importance in sectors such as information technology, startups, research, manufacturing, and international business. The airport currently offers direct connectivity to dozens of domestic and international destinations, making it a crucial gateway for travellers from southern India.
The milestone was reviewed during a recent board meeting of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), where authorities highlighted the airport’s consistent operational growth despite challenges in the global aviation market. Airport management stated that strong passenger demand, improved infrastructure, and expansion in international connectivity have played a key role in achieving the landmark figure.
Cargo operations at the airport also recorded major growth during the financial year. Bengaluru Airport handled more than 5 lakh metric tonnes of cargo, including exports of pharmaceuticals, electronics, flowers, fruits, automobile components, and e-commerce shipments. The airport has continued to strengthen its role as a major logistics and cargo center in India.
One of the notable achievements during the year included the export of millions of flower stems and agricultural products to international markets. Aviation experts believe Bengaluru’s cargo growth reflects the city’s expanding role in global supply chains and international trade networks.
Operational activity at the airport also reached record levels, with hundreds of daily flight movements connecting Bengaluru to destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. On peak travel days, the airport handled more than one lakh passengers and several hundred aircraft movements, demonstrating its growing capacity and operational efficiency.
The airport has also received multiple international recognitions for passenger experience, airport services, and infrastructure quality. Industry experts say Bengaluru Airport’s modern facilities, expansion projects, and focus on technology-driven operations have helped it compete with some of the leading airports in the region.
Aviation analysts believe crossing the 400 million passenger milestone is a significant achievement not only for Bengaluru Airport but also for India’s rapidly growing aviation industry. With rising air travel demand, ongoing infrastructure development, and increasing international connectivity, the airport is expected to continue its strong growth in the coming years.
The milestone further reinforces Bengaluru’s position as a key global business and travel destination while highlighting the growing importance of India’s aviation sector in international air connectivity and trade.
