Nagpur Airport to Become Central India’s Growth Engine, Says Nitin Gadkari

Nagpur Airport News
Nagpur is poised to become one of India’s most important aviation and logistics hubs, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighting the transformative role that the city’s airport will play in driving economic growth across Central India. Speaking during the formal handover of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport to the GMR Group, Gadkari described the move as a historic milestone for the development of Vidarbha and the broader central region.
The airport’s modernization and expansion plans are expected to significantly enhance passenger and cargo handling capacity while attracting fresh investments, businesses, and employment opportunities. Gadkari emphasized that Nagpur’s strategic geographic location, strong road network, and growing industrial ecosystem make it an ideal destination for becoming a logistics and aviation powerhouse.
A key part of the vision involves improving international connectivity. Gadkari urged authorities to introduce direct flights from Nagpur to destinations such as Dubai and Singapore, stating that global connectivity is essential for boosting trade, tourism, and investment. According to him, stronger international links will help position Nagpur as a gateway for cargo movement and business activity across Central India.
The airport expansion project will be implemented in phases. Initial plans include increasing passenger terminal capacity to handle around three million passengers annually. Future phases aim to expand capacity dramatically, with long-term projections targeting up to 30 million passengers each year. The redevelopment will also include upgraded airside infrastructure, a new air traffic control tower, and enhanced operational facilities.
Officials have also announced the development of a dedicated cargo facility capable of handling approximately 20,000 metric tonnes of freight. This addition is expected to strengthen Nagpur’s role in regional and national supply chains while supporting industries across Maharashtra and neighboring states.
Meanwhile, Devendra Fadnavis said the airport would become one of the biggest engines of growth for Vidarbha and Central India. He noted that the project could accelerate Nagpur’s emergence as a major Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub while attracting investments in aviation-related services and manufacturing.
With large-scale infrastructure investments already flowing into the region, policymakers believe the airport’s transformation will strengthen Nagpur’s position as a leading center for aviation, logistics, trade, and industrial growth in the years ahead.
