Customs officers at Mumbai airport have arrested a 19-year-old man from Ulhasnagar for allegedly carrying marijuana from Bangkok. About 960 grams of hydroponic marijuana was found hidden inside a food packet in his backpack.

The arrest took place on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit stopped the passenger after he arrived from Bangkok. According to Customs sources, officers picked him out through “spot profiling”, meaning they noticed signs he might be carrying banned items.

Officers searched his backpack. They found it stuffed with clothes and one food packet. When they cut open the food packet, they found two plastic packets inside. These were filled with marijuana, also known as hydroponic weed, weighing 960 grams. The passenger was then arrested.

The young man told officers he had been befriended by a woman in Bangkok. He said she asked for his “help” in delivering a package to her relative in Mumbai. He claimed he did not know what was inside the parcel.

According to the report, his lawyer also said that the woman had persuaded him to deliver the parcel without informing him of its contents, and that he has been granted bail. These are claims made by the accused and his lawyer, and they have not been proven. The court will decide the case after the investigation.

A Customs officer said the early investigation indicates that other people are involved who have not yet been traced. As the case is still at a preliminary stage, officers are trying to identify and arrest the accused’s key associates. They may review travel records, phone messages and contacts to determine who planned the delivery.
