Mali International Airport News

Mali faced fresh violence on Saturday morning after several attacks were reported in the capital Bamako and other regions of the country. Loud explosions and heavy gunfire were heard near a military base and close to the international airport.

The Malian army said armed terrorist groups carried out coordinated attacks on security positions in Bamako and other cities. Officials added that military operations were underway and asked citizens to remain calm.

Witnesses said two powerful blasts were heard near the Kati military base, one of the country’s key army camps, followed by continuous firing. Security forces quickly sealed roads around the area.

Gunshots were also reported near a military camp that provides security to Bamako’s airport. Residents said the airport itself did not appear to be the main target.

The unrest spread beyond the capital, with reports of violence coming from Sevare, Kidal and Gao in central and northern Mali.

No organisation immediately accepted responsibility. However, security sources suspect Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked militant group active in the region.

Mali has remained unstable since military coups in 2020 and 2021 brought Assimi Goita to power. Despite promises to restore order, attacks on soldiers and civilians have continued.

The country has recently relied on Russian mercenary forces for support while reducing cooperation with Western nations. At the same time, reports suggest Mali has also explored limited security talks with the United States.
