Trichy Airport News: Diwali Passenger Traffic Drops 20% Amid High Fares

Trichy Airport News
Diwali has traditionally been one of the busiest seasons for Trichy International Airport, as non-resident Indians (NRIs) travel home to celebrate the festival with family and friends. However, this year’s festive season saw a unexpected decline in crowd numbers, with both domestic and international passenger traffic dropping by approximately 20%.
A massive hike in airfares, alongside alternative domestic transport options and flight suspensions, played a major role in keeping travelers away.
The main reason behind the traffic decline is a steep increase in ticket prices. Fares spiked by nearly 50% on key international routes compared to standard rates. For example, round-trip fares between Singapore and Trichy saw a sharp rise around the festival, forcing many families to postpone or cancel their festive visits home.
In addition to rising ticket costs, flight suspensions from certain sectors in the Middle East further reduced international arrivals. For domestic travelers, cheaper transport modes such as special trains and buses served as attractive alternatives to expensive short-haul flights.

Data collected during the key days leading up to Diwali highlights the notable slump in passenger volume compared to the previous year’s peak period:
| Operations | Last Year (Peak 5-Day Period) | This Year (Nov 1–4) | Traffic Impact |
| International Passengers | 13,585 | 11,813 | 📉 Down |
| Domestic Passengers | 8,636 | 6,335 | 📉 Down |
| Flight Operations | Base flight volume | Down by ~10% | 📉 Slight drop |
Although total flight operations declined by only 10%, the overall drop in passenger numbers reached 20%. Notably, the passenger volume during the first four days of November was even lower than the airport’s daily average for October, reflecting an unusually muted festive rush for Trichy Airport this year.
