Foreign Airlines Seek Ministry Help Over Slot Cuts

Foreign airlines operating out of Mumbai have approached the Civil Aviation Ministry to step in and help restore their flight schedules for the Summer 2027 season. This request comes after Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) decided to deny summer schedule slots to foreign carriers on select routes. The move is part of the airport’s larger strategy to relocate specific international operations to the nearby Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

In a formal representation submitted on Friday, the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) expressed deep concern over the sudden decision. The group stated that historical flight slots were declined without prior consultation or discussion with the affected foreign airlines.

The AOC has sought clarification from the Civil Aviation Ministry on whether the government officially approved the plan to cancel these established slots.

The committee highlighted that forcing airlines to shift out of Mumbai’s primary airport will harm overall network planning and strain passenger connectivity. While airlines support airport modernization, they emphasized that changes to historical operational rights must follow transparent procedures and adhere strictly to IATA Worldwide Airport Slot Guidelines as well as Indian regulatory frameworks.

The decision by Mumbai airport authorities is linked to the planned redevelopment of the aging Terminal 1 (T1). To make room for construction and manage capacity, the airport intends to move flights serving 14 specific international destinations to Navi Mumbai International Airport starting late March 2027.
