Air India News
In major news for international travelers, Air India has officially restarted non-stop flight operations connecting New Delhi and Mumbai to key destinations in the United States. The airline was able to eliminate a mandatory technical refuelling stop at Rome, Italy, after Iraq recently opened its airspace—previously restricted for over a decade to military and security operations—to commercial aviation.
This updated flight path reduces overall travel time by approximately three hours, cutting down long-haul journeys from 21 hours to nearly 18 hours.
Air India currently operates four direct services to the United States:
The New Indian Express
- New York (JFK Airport): Two daily services originating from Delhi and Mumbai. The New Indian Express
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR): Two regular services originating from Delhi and Mumbai. The New Indian Express
Under the new navigation clearance, direct flights departing Delhi and Mumbai now overfly Rajasthan, Gujarat, Oman, the UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, and Turkey before crossing Europe and heading over the Atlantic to the US.
Previously, due to restricted airspace over Iraq, aircraft were forced to fly a circuitous southern route over Oman, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia, making a technical halt in Rome for refuelling. During these refuelling stops, passengers were required to remain on board the aircraft.
The restoration of true non-stop flights gives Air India a significant competitive edge over major Gulf carriers. Flying directly eliminates layovers in transit hubs, providing a faster and more convenient travel option for passengers flying between India and the United States.
According to airline officials, the reopening of international corridors provides much-needed flexibility in long-haul route planning. However, operating ultra-long-haul direct flights requires a load penalty trade-off: carrying full fuel tanks limits maximum passenger capacity and cargo weight to keep the aircraft within permissible limits.
