A handwritten note warning of a bomb at a boarding gate triggered a security search at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Friday, 23 October 2026. Officials said flight operations continued without any disruption.

The note was written on a piece of tissue paper. An airport cleaning staff member found it in a women’s toilet. It warned of a bomb at boarding gate number 30. The staff member immediately alerted the authorities.

After the alert, the area around the boarding gate was cleared. A bomb squad and personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) then began an extensive search of the airport premises. Officials said that, at the time of the report, no suspicious object had been found.

Security was tightened across the airport as a precaution. Even so, an airport official said that flights were not affected.

Bidhannagar City Police started questioning the cleaning staff member who found the note. Investigators are also checking CCTV footage to identify the person who may have left it in the toilet. The report does not say whether anyone has been identified or detained so far.

This is not the first such incident this month. About two weeks ago, on 8 October, the airport received another bomb threat, this time by email. Security agencies searched the premises after alerting passengers and clearing certain areas. No explosives were found during that search either.

Most bomb threats at airports turn out to be false. Still, security teams treat each one as real until the area is fully checked. Clearing the area, using bomb squads and searching the premises are standard steps meant to protect passengers and staff. Airports also use CCTV to trace who may be behind such threats, because false threats can cause fear and waste security resources.

The investigation is still going on. More details may come out once police complete their questioning and CCTV checks. Passengers are advised to follow the instructions of security staff and report anything suspicious at the airport.
