Passengers of SpiceJet flight SG648 staged a protest at Kolkata airport on Thursday, 22 October 2026. The Bengaluru-bound flight left more than six hours behind schedule. Airport sources said this was the second such disruption involving the airline in two days.

The flight was scheduled to leave Kolkata at 9.10 am, but it finally took off at 3.29 pm. Passengers said the airline did not tell them about the delay in advance. After they reached the airport, they also did not get clear updates.

Several passengers said they had arrived well before the departure time. Even then, they were not told why the flight was delayed or when it would leave.

Passengers also alleged that they tried to contact the airline many times. According to them, calls to the airline’s duty manager went unanswered, and the duty phone stayed busy for long periods. Calls to the station manager were also not picked up, they said.

As their anger grew, a group of passengers gathered outside the airport manager’s office. They staged a protest and demanded answers and accountability from the airline.

Airport sources said a similar incident took place on Wednesday. Another SpiceJet flight failed to leave on time that day. Passengers then surrounded the airport manager and held a demonstration.

Two protests in two days suggest that passengers are facing repeated problems with the airline’s flight operations and communication at Kolkata airport.

After the protest, senior airport officials reportedly contacted the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and informed it about the situation. The DGCA is India’s aviation regulator. The report does not say what action, if any, the regulator has taken.

Flight delays can happen because of technical issues, weather or operational reasons. But passengers usually accept delays more easily when the airline explains the cause and gives regular updates. When there is no information, travellers feel confused and frustrated, as seen in this case.

The report does not include any statement from SpiceJet about the reason for the delay. Further details may come out if the airline responds or if the DGCA takes any action.
