A water connection linked to a mosque near Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2) has come under scrutiny after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inspected the site following a complaint. The civic body has asked airport authorities to provide approval documents for the water connection or take steps to disconnect it if it is found to be unauthorised.
The matter came to attention after a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that the structure near the airport was operating without the required permissions. He also raised questions about its water and electricity connections.
The BMC’s K-South Ward water works department inspected the location on September 16. During the inspection, officials reportedly found a 15-mm-diameter pipeline supplying water to the structure.
According to the information provided, the water connection was not found in the records of the ward office. Following the inspection, a BMC assistant engineer wrote to the executive engineer at Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 on September 17.
The letter asked the airport authorities to submit the required BMC approval for the water connection within seven days.
The civic body has asked the airport authorities to verify whether the connection has the necessary permissions. If the connection is found to be unauthorised, the authorities have been asked to discontinue the supply.
The BMC has also indicated that further action could be taken under the Municipal Corporation Act if the required approvals are not provided or if the connection is found to violate applicable rules.
The issue is currently at the stage of verification and investigation.
The inspection followed a complaint regarding the alleged water connection at a mosque located near the T2 airport taxi stand, close to JW Marriott Hotel on IA Project Road in Andheri East.
Somaiya has also alleged that the structure is situated on airport land and was operating without the necessary permissions. These claims are subject to examination by the concerned authorities.
The issue extends beyond the water connection. According to the information provided, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has also declared the structure illegal.
The MMRDA reportedly said that the airport area’s Interim Development Plan (IDP) does not permit a public place of worship at the location.
The authority has reportedly issued a notice directing those associated with the structure to vacate the premises within four weeks. The report states that further action, including possible demolition, could follow if the notice is not complied with.
The developments near Mumbai Airport T2 involve several agencies, including the BMC, MMRDA, airport authorities and police.
At present, the exact legal status of the water connection and the structure is being examined by the relevant authorities. The BMC has sought supporting documents, while the MMRDA has taken separate action regarding the structure.
Further steps will depend on the documents submitted, the findings of the inspections and the decisions of the concerned authorities. The matter has drawn attention because it involves airport-area land, civic infrastructure and questions over required permissions.
