Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) has secured the 28th position in the 2026 global ranking of the world’s most-connected international airports, according to an OAG report. The ranking marks a significant change for the airport, which was placed at No. 39 in the previous year.
Delhi Airport moved up 11 places in the latest ranking and became the only Indian airport to feature in the global top 50. The airport also ranked ninth in the Asia-Pacific region and ninth among the world’s low-cost megahubs.
The OAG ranking measured the number of possible international connections available through airports. Delhi recorded 2,174 possible international connections during the ranking period.
This figure highlights the airport’s role as a major international connecting point for passengers travelling to and from India. The large number of connections allows travellers to use Delhi as a transfer point while travelling between different international destinations.
Delhi Airport has become an important gateway for international air travel in India, handling a large share of the country’s connecting traffic.
Low-cost airline IndiGo accounted for around 40% of flights at Delhi Airport, according to the report. The airline’s large flight network contributes significantly to the airport’s overall connectivity.
IndiGo also has a strong presence at Mumbai Airport, where it accounted for about 43% of flights and 60% of the airport’s low-cost-carrier capacity. At Delhi, the airline’s share of low-cost-carrier capacity was reported at 57%.
Mumbai Airport, another major international gateway in India, recorded 1,819 possible international connections in the same OAG ranking period.
While Mumbai did not enter the global top 50 in the overall list mentioned in the report, it ranked 11th in the world’s low-cost megahub category.
The report describes Delhi and Mumbai as India’s main international gateways. Delhi handles a large amount of international connecting traffic, while Mumbai serves as an important gateway for travel between India and markets across the Middle East, Europe and Asia.
