Delhi Airport News: Heavy Rain and Winds Divert 15 Incoming Flights

Delhi Airport News
Heavy rain and strong winds caused major disruptions to flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Sunday, forcing 15 incoming flights to divert to nearby airports in Jaipur and Lucknow. The adverse weather affected both domestic and international services, leading to delays and inconvenience for hundreds of passengers.
According to airport officials, the sudden spell of bad weather made it unsafe for several aircraft to land in Delhi. As a result, pilots were instructed to divert their flights to alternate airports until weather conditions improved. The diversions included five international flights and several domestic services from different parts of India.
Among the international flights diverted to Jaipur International Airport were Air Astana flight KC907 from Almaty, Thai Airways flight TG323 from Bangkok, Air India flight AI4208 from Dubai, and IndiGo flight 6E 64 from Jeddah. These aircraft landed safely in Jaipur after being unable to approach Delhi because of poor weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 also showed that multiple domestic flights heading to Delhi had to change their destinations. Air India flights arriving from Kolkata, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai were among those diverted to Jaipur. In addition, IndiGo flights from Bengaluru and Ahmedabad also landed in Jaipur instead of Delhi.
Three other Delhi-bound flights were diverted to Lucknow Airport. These included an Air India Express flight from Ranchi, an IndiGo flight from Mumbai, and an Air India flight from Rajkot. Airport authorities ensured that passengers remained safe while waiting for weather conditions in Delhi to improve.
Sources at Jaipur International Airport said that 12 diverted flights landed between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm. After the weather in Delhi became favorable, these aircraft resumed their journey to the national capital. Although the diversions were temporary, they caused delays to several other scheduled flights, affecting airline operations throughout the day.
The weather-related disruption also impacted passengers waiting at Delhi Airport, as many arriving and departing flights were delayed. Travelers were advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines for the latest flight information and schedule updates before heading to the airport.
Heavy rain and gusty winds often create challenging conditions for aircraft during landing and takeoff. In such situations, airlines and air traffic controllers prioritize passenger safety by diverting flights to nearby airports whenever necessary. While diversions can cause inconvenience, they are a standard safety measure followed across the aviation industry.
Weather experts said that changing monsoon conditions can continue to affect flight operations in northern India over the coming days. Passengers traveling to or from Delhi are advised to monitor weather forecasts and airline notifications, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
Despite the temporary disruption, all diverted flights landed safely, and operations gradually returned to normal once weather conditions improved. Airport authorities and airlines worked together to restore schedules and minimize inconvenience to passengers as quickly as possible.
