Delhi Airport Third Runway Closure Extended Until September Amid Major Upgrade Project

India’s busiest airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi, may keep its third runway closed until September 2026 as large-scale modernization and rehabilitation work continues. The runway, officially known as 11R/29L, was initially expected to reopen in early July after being closed in February this year. However, the complexity of the ongoing upgrade project may lead to an extended closure.
The runway was shut down on February 26, 2026, to allow airport authorities to carry out major improvements aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and passenger convenience. The project is part of a broader plan to modernize airport infrastructure and prepare for future growth in air traffic. The third runway is undergoing extensive rehabilitation work that includes resurfacing, construction of a rapid-exit taxiway, and the installation of an advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS). These upgrades are expected to improve aircraft movement and support smoother operations, especially during poor weather conditions.
One of the most important aspects of the project is the installation of an upgraded ILS. This technology helps pilots land aircraft safely in low visibility situations such as fog, rain, or dust storms. Delhi frequently experiences dense fog during winter, making advanced landing systems essential for maintaining flight schedules. In addition, the new rapid-exit taxiway will allow aircraft to leave the runway more quickly after landing. This reduces runway occupancy time and improves overall airport efficiency by allowing more aircraft movements within a shorter period.
Delhi Airport handles approximately 1,520 flight movements every day, making it one of the busiest aviation hubs in Asia. With one of its four runways unavailable, airport authorities have had to carefully manage air traffic to minimize disruptions. Although airport operations have continued, airlines and passengers have occasionally experienced delays due to increased pressure on the remaining runways. Air traffic controllers and airport management teams have been coordinating closely to ensure that flight operations remain safe and efficient throughout the upgrade period.
The possibility of extending the runway closure until September may create additional scheduling challenges for airlines, particularly during peak travel periods. However, airport officials believe the long-term benefits of the project outweigh the temporary inconvenience.
