Mumbai Airport News: Terminal 1B Redevelopment to Begin in January 2027

Mumbai Airport News
Adani Airports-operated Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is set to begin the phased redevelopment of the North Section of Terminal 1B at Mumbai Airport from January 2027. The redevelopment is being planned because of concerns related to the ageing infrastructure of the terminal.
According to Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), the work will be carried out in phases to reduce the impact on passengers and airline operations. In the first phase, only the North Section of Terminal 1B will be demolished and redeveloped.
The North Section represents around one-third of Terminal 1’s capacity. By limiting the initial redevelopment work to this section, the airport operator expects most passenger traffic at Mumbai airport to continue without major disruption.
Mumbai Airport handles approximately 55 million passengers every year. Of these, around five million passengers, or nearly 9 per cent, are expected to be temporarily affected by the redevelopment project.
AAHL CEO Arun Bansal said around 91 per cent of Mumbai Airport’s passenger traffic will remain unaffected during the redevelopment. The company has said that the phased approach is intended to reduce disruption while the ageing airport infrastructure is upgraded.
The redevelopment is also expected to involve temporary changes to some airline operations. Some flights and services may be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport during the transition period.
According to AAHL, such a temporary movement of airline operations should not be considered a permanent shift of traffic away from Mumbai Airport. The changes are linked to the redevelopment and are intended to support airport operations while construction work is carried out.
The project comes as Mumbai Airport continues to handle a large volume of passengers each year. The redevelopment of the ageing Terminal 1B infrastructure is expected to improve the airport facilities and address concerns related to the condition of the existing structure.
Passengers travelling through Mumbai Airport during the redevelopment period may therefore see changes in airline operations and terminal arrangements. Travellers will need to check flight and terminal information with their airlines before their journey.
The phased redevelopment is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with the first stage focusing on the North Section of Terminal 1B.
