Mumbai Airport News: Terminal 1 to Shut for Four Years From October 25

Mumbai Airport News
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is set for a major redevelopment as Terminal 1 (T1) will stop handling flight operations from October 25, 2026. The terminal is expected to remain closed until 2029-30 as part of a large demolition and reconstruction project.
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates the airport, said the redevelopment is being carried out following a directive from the Airports Authority of India. The project is aimed at replacing the ageing terminal with a modern airport facility that can meet future passenger and operational requirements.
Terminal 1 has been an important part of Mumbai airport’s operations and handled nearly 15 million passengers during the financial year 2025-26. Its closure will therefore bring changes for passengers travelling through the airport.
During the redevelopment period, flight operations that were earlier handled at T1 will have to be managed through the airport’s other terminals. Passengers should carefully check their flight details and terminal information before travelling, especially after the October 25 transition.
The closure is expected to continue for around four years because the project involves major construction work. The existing terminal will be demolished and rebuilt as part of the planned transformation.
For flyers, checking the terminal mentioned on the airline ticket or booking confirmation will be important. Passengers should also follow updates from their respective airlines and Mumbai airport before leaving for the airport. This can help them avoid confusion about terminal changes, check-in locations and other travel arrangements.
The redevelopment of T1 is part of the wider effort to modernise Mumbai airport infrastructure. Once the new terminal is completed, it is expected to provide a more modern facility for passengers and support the airport’s future operational needs.
With the closure beginning on October 25, 2026, passengers using Mumbai airport should plan their journeys carefully and verify all terminal-related information before travelling.
