Mumbai Police have arrested a 36-year-old Bangladeshi man at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after immigration officials suspected that he was travelling with a forged Indian passport. The arrest was made on July 22, following a routine immigration check that raised doubts about the authenticity of his travel documents.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Babu Biswas, also known as Tapas Biswas. Officials became suspicious during questioning because his dialect closely resembled that of people from Bangladesh. This prompted immigration authorities to conduct a more detailed verification of his identity and documents.
During the investigation, police found that the accused had allegedly entered India illegally in 2016 through the porous India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. He reportedly crossed the border along with his wife and other family members. After entering India, the family settled in Kolkata, where Biswas worked as a daily wage labourer for nearly seven years.
Police said that during his stay in India, Biswas allegedly obtained several Indian identity documents, including an Aadhaar card and a PAN card. Using these documents, he is accused of obtaining an Indian passport in 2023.
Officials further revealed that after receiving the passport, Biswas travelled abroad several times. According to the investigation, he made two trips to the Maldives and one trip to Colombo, Sri Lanka, using the Indian passport. His international travel continued without any major issues until immigration officials detected irregularities during his latest attempt to travel through Mumbai airport.
The case came to light because immigration officers noticed inconsistencies during the verification process. His speech and background information led officials to carry out additional checks, which eventually resulted in his detention and arrest.
The Sahar Police have registered a case and started a detailed investigation. Authorities are trying to determine how the accused managed to obtain Indian identity documents and whether any individuals or document-forging networks helped him secure the passport.
Police are also investigating if similar cases are linked to larger illegal immigration or fake document rackets operating in different parts of the country. Officials believe that identifying those involved in preparing forged identity documents is important for strengthening national security.
Indian authorities have been increasing surveillance at airports and border areas to prevent illegal immigration and the misuse of forged travel documents. Immigration officers regularly verify passports and identity documents to ensure that passengers are travelling legally.
The arrest of the accused highlights the importance of strict document verification at airports. Further investigations are underway, and police are expected to take legal action based on the findings of the case. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests if links to organised document fraud or illegal immigration networks are discovered.
