The Civil Aviation Ministry has asked Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) to put its plan to shift international flights from Mumbai airport to Navi Mumbai airport on hold. The proposed transfer was planned as part of the redevelopment of Terminal 1 at Mumbai airport.

Under the earlier plan, 265 weekly international departure slots, which account for more than one-third of Mumbai airport’s international departures, were to be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport from October 25.

The ministry’s decision follows concerns raised by airlines about the possible impact of the proposed changes. Airlines have reportedly raised concerns about operational disruptions and potential commercial losses if a large number of international flights are moved within a short period.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has also asked Adani Airports to prepare a fresh roadmap for the redevelopment of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1. The revised plan is expected to take into account the concerns raised by airlines and the operational requirements of the airport.

Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1 redevelopment is expected to require changes to existing flight operations. The proposed shift of international services to Navi Mumbai was intended to create additional capacity at Mumbai airport while redevelopment work takes place.

However, the plan to move 265 weekly international slots has now been deferred. This means the earlier October 25 transition plan will not proceed in its current form.

The latest development also puts greater focus on coordination between the airport operator, airlines and aviation authorities. Any revised plan will need to consider how flight operations can continue while redevelopment work is carried out.

Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to play an important role in handling additional air traffic from the Mumbai metropolitan region. Shifting some services to the new airport could help manage capacity, but the timing and scale of the transition remain important issues for airlines.

The ministry’s request for a fresh redevelopment roadmap means Adani Airports will need to review its earlier approach. Further discussions with airlines and other stakeholders are expected before a new plan is finalised.

For passengers, any changes to international flight operations will depend on the revised plan and the approvals that follow. Airlines are expected to provide updated information if their flight schedules or airport locations change.
