Heavy rainfall in Delhi caused waterlogging at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday, September 4, leading to flight diversions, delays and traffic problems for passengers. The heavy rain affected airport operations and created difficulties for people travelling to and from the airport.
Water accumulated in the forecourt and subway areas of two airport terminals. In some places, the water reportedly reached knee level, forcing passengers and airport staff to walk through flooded areas. Airport personnel worked for more than 45 minutes to clear the affected stretches.
The poor weather conditions affected flight operations at Delhi airport. Eleven incoming flights, including an international cargo flight, were diverted to other airports because of the adverse weather.
Some flights were diverted to Lucknow, including Air India services arriving from Ludhiana, Indore and Hyderabad. An Akasa Air flight from Bengaluru was also diverted to Lucknow.
Several other flights were sent to Jaipur. These included flights arriving from Srinagar, Purnea, Bengaluru, Pune and Ranchi.
An SF Airlines cargo flight travelling from Ezhou in China was diverted to Ahmedabad, while an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad was diverted to Chandigarh.
Apart from diversions, hundreds of flights experienced delays. The delays ranged from a few minutes to more than 90 minutes, depending on the flight and operating conditions.
The rain also caused major problems on roads leading to the airport. Severe traffic congestion made it difficult for passengers to reach the terminals on time.
Videos shared on social media showed passengers and airport employees walking through waterlogged areas. Some people were seen rolling up their trousers while trying to move through the flooded sections.
The situation created concern among passengers, particularly those travelling on flights that were already facing delays.
Delhi airport authorities said that heavy rainfall resulted in water accumulation in approach roads and forecourt areas. The affected areas were subsequently cleared by airport personnel.
The airport also advised passengers to remain aware of possible changes to their flight schedules because bad weather can affect arrivals and departures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast moderate rainfall across most parts of Delhi, with heavy rainfall of around 50 to 100 mm possible at isolated locations.
The weather department also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Wind speeds were expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts of up to 60 kmph.
The IMD issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning residents about possible waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses. The weather office had earlier issued a red alert for intense rainfall in the national capital.
The latest disruption highlights how heavy monsoon rainfall can affect both airport operations and road connectivity in Delhi. Passengers travelling through the capital are likely to face delays if heavy rain continues, making it important to check flight status and allow extra travel time while heading to the airport.
