Mumbai Airport Customs officials have arrested a Malaysian national for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected hydroponic weed into India. The passenger was intercepted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after arriving from Bangkok.
The accused has been identified as Ahmad Razali, a Malaysian citizen. According to Customs officials, he arrived at Mumbai airport on Thursday night and was stopped in the arrival hall based on suspicion.
During the examination of his trolley bag, Customs officers reportedly found several packets hidden among clothes. The bag contained 12 vacuum-sealed plastic packets with around 1.8 kg of suspected hydroponic weed.
The substance was seized by the Customs officials for further investigation. Officials are now examining how the contraband was obtained and whether other people were involved in the alleged smuggling operation.
Following the recovery, Customs officials questioned Ahmad Razali and recorded his voluntary statement. According to officials, he admitted to the non-declaration, concealment, carrying and recovery of the suspected hydroponic weed for monetary consideration.
Based on the preliminary findings, the passenger was arrested on Friday under the relevant provisions of the law. He was later produced before a court, where he was sent to judicial custody.
The case is now under investigation. Customs officials are trying to identify people who may have helped or worked with the accused. They are also investigating the possible role of other associates connected with the alleged smuggling attempt.
A Customs official said that the investigation is still at a very early stage. Authorities are making efforts to identify and apprehend key associates of the accused.
The incident highlights the continued efforts of Customs officials at Mumbai Airport to detect illegal substances being brought into the country through international flights. Passengers arriving from international destinations are subject to security and Customs checks, and suspicious baggage can be examined by officials.
