Chennai Airport News: AAI Submits DPR for Elevated Road From Tambaram-Porur Road

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Tamil Nadu government for a proposed elevated road connecting the Tambaram–Porur Road with Chennai Airport. The project is aimed at creating an alternative access route to the rear side of the airport.
AAI has indicated that it is ready to take up the road project if the State government provides the required approval. The proposed elevated corridor is planned to cross the Adyar River and provide direct connectivity to the airport’s rear side.
The new road is expected to help both passenger and cargo vehicles reach the airport more easily. At present, much of the traffic depends on the GST Road, which is a busy route. A separate access route could help reduce traffic pressure and improve connectivity to the airport.
The proposed road is also linked to AAI’s plans for a fifth terminal at Chennai Airport. The new terminal is expected to increase the airport’s passenger-handling capacity and improve the use of remote aircraft parking bays.
The fifth terminal proposal had been under consideration for several years. AAI revived the project in 2024 as part of efforts to expand the airport’s facilities and meet future traffic requirements.
An alternative road connection is also important for cargo operations. Officials have pointed out that cargo vehicles using the airport’s main entrance can face difficulties because of traffic and restrictions on the GST Road. A dedicated route could make it easier for freight vehicles travelling to the airport from different parts of Tamil Nadu.
The elevated road across the Adyar River has been considered for some time. Before moving ahead with the proposal, AAI had commissioned a hydrological study by the Centre for Water Resources at Anna University.
The study was aimed at examining how the proposed structures could affect the river’s water flow during normal conditions, the monsoon season and floods.
The Tamil Nadu government’s approval will be important for the project to move forward. If approved, the proposed road could provide another important connection to Chennai Airport and support its future expansion plans.
