Bhogapuram Airport News

The newly inaugurated Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, will begin commercial flight operations from August 17, 2026, according to airport developer GMR Group. The airport is expected to improve air connectivity in the region and support economic growth through better transport facilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the airport on August 1, 2026. The launch marks an important milestone for Andhra Pradesh, as the airport is expected to serve millions of passengers every year and strengthen the state’s aviation infrastructure.

According to GMR, the Bhogapuram airport is the second greenfield airport in India to start operations this year. The first was Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, which began commercial flight services on June 15, 2026. The addition of another modern greenfield airport reflects the country’s efforts to expand its aviation network and improve regional connectivity.

Initially, the Bhogapuram airport will have the capacity to handle six million passengers annually.

As passenger demand increases over the coming years, the airport’s capacity will be expanded in phases to 40 million passengers per year.

This planned expansion is expected to make Bhogapuram one of the major airports in southern India.

The airport has been developed over 2,200 acres of land by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL).

The project has been implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) framework. GMR stated that the airport was completed several months ahead of schedule, demonstrating efficient project execution.

The new airport has been built with modern infrastructure and advanced passenger facilities. It is expected to improve domestic and international air connectivity for Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and other nearby districts. The airport will also reduce pressure on the existing Visakhapatnam Airport by handling growing passenger traffic.

Officials believe the airport will become a major driver of economic development in North Andhra. Better air connectivity is expected to attract new investments, promote tourism, strengthen trade, and support industrial growth. Businesses involved in manufacturing, exports, logistics, and services are also likely to benefit from improved transportation facilities.

The airport is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities during its operational phase. Jobs will be created in airport management, airlines, ground handling, hospitality, retail, transportation, and other related sectors.

With commercial flights scheduled to begin on August 17, airlines are expected to announce domestic and international routes in the coming days. Passengers travelling from North Andhra will soon have access to a modern airport equipped with improved facilities and better connectivity.

The launch of Bhogapuram International Airport represents a major achievement for Andhra Pradesh’s aviation sector. As commercial operations begin, the airport is expected to play an important role in boosting regional development, supporting tourism, creating jobs, and improving connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and destinations across India and around the world.
