The long-awaited Bengaluru Metro Blue Line, which will connect Silk Board with Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), is expected to meet its 2027 completion deadline, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
The metro project is being developed under Phase 2A and Phase 2B and has made significant progress. However, around 72.75 per cent of the work has been completed so far. BMRCL has said that it will continue to follow its planned timeline despite delays and challenges on some sections of the corridor.
The Blue Line is an important metro project for Bengaluru as it will provide a direct public transport connection between the city and Kempegowda International Airport. The corridor is planned to cover around 58.19 km under Phase 2A and Phase 2B. The project has an estimated cost of around Rs 14,788 crore.
Once completed, the metro line is expected to make travel between different parts of Bengaluru and the airport easier and more convenient. It could also help reduce road traffic on important routes leading to the airport.
According to the BMRCL timeline, different parts of the Blue Line are expected to become operational at different times.
The Silk Board–KR Puram section is expected to open by late 2026. The Hebbal–Kempegowda International Airport section is planned to be completed by mid-2027. The most challenging section is the KR Puram–Hebbal stretch. BMRCL expects this section to be completed by the end of 2027. This section has been described as the weak link in the airport metro corridor because of construction challenges and delays.
The Bengaluru Metro Phase 2A and Phase 2B projects have faced several delays and missed earlier deadlines. Despite these setbacks, BMRCL has said that the work is progressing and that the agency remains committed to meeting the latest schedule. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed the Lok Sabha on July 30 that the 58.19-km Phase 2A and 2B projects were 72.75 per cent complete as of June.
The ministry also stated that the 72.09-km Phase 2 project was around 95.70 per cent complete during the same period. Among the different sections of the Blue Line, the KR Puram–Hebbal stretch remains a major challenge for BMRCL. Construction in this area has faced difficulties, making it an important part of the overall project schedule.
BMRCL is now working to complete the remaining construction within the revised timeline. The completion of the Blue Line is expected to improve connectivity between Bengaluru city and Kempegowda International Airport. A metro connection can provide passengers with another travel option apart from road transport.
The airport line is also expected to benefit daily commuters, airport employees and travellers who need reliable transportation between the city and the airport. With 72.75 per cent of Phase 2A and 2B work already completed, attention is now focused on the remaining construction. BMRCL has maintained that the project will meet its 2027 deadline, with the final section expected to be completed by the end of the year.
If the timeline is achieved, the Bengaluru Metro Blue Line will become a major addition to the city’s public transport network and provide an important link to Kempegowda International Airport.
