Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has launched a new pilot initiative called “PreSecure” at Terminal 1, aiming to reduce security screening wait times and improve the overall passenger experience. The service, introduced by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), allows travelers to reserve a dedicated security screening slot before arriving at the airport, helping them avoid long queues during peak travel hours.
The new system is being tested as a free service during its pilot phase and is available through the BLR Pulse mobile application. Passengers flying from Terminal 1 can book a preferred screening time by scanning their boarding pass within the app and selecting an available slot. Reservations can be made up to 75 minutes before departure, offering travelers greater flexibility and predictability when planning their airport journey.
Once a slot is confirmed, passengers are directed to a dedicated security lane near check-in counter 86 at Terminal 1. This separate lane is designed to streamline the screening process and reduce congestion at regular security checkpoints. Airport officials believe the initiative could significantly improve passenger flow, particularly during busy travel periods when long queues often become a challenge.
The introduction of PreSecure comes as airports worldwide increasingly adopt technology-driven solutions to enhance operational efficiency and passenger convenience. Bengaluru Airport has already been recognized for its customer experience and has continued investing in infrastructure upgrades. Earlier this year, the airport added a new security check zone with additional screening lanes and dedicated access for travelers using pre-booked security slots through the Pulse app.
Long security queues have historically been a concern for passengers at major airports, including Bengaluru. In previous years, travelers reported waiting for extended periods during peak hours, occasionally leading to stressful last-minute boarding situations. Airport authorities hope that a slot-based screening system will help distribute passenger traffic more evenly and minimize bottlenecks.
While the service is currently free, reports suggest BIAL may introduce a fee once the pilot program is fully implemented. The airport operator is closely monitoring passenger feedback and operational performance before making a decision on a wider rollout. If successful, PreSecure could become a model for other airports in India looking to improve security screening efficiency while delivering a faster and more convenient travel experience.
