The Government of India has launched a new hub-and-spoke aviation model at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar to make international travel easier and more convenient for passengers. The new system allows travellers to complete all major travel formalities at Amritsar before flying to Delhi for their onward international flights.
The initiative was officially launched in the presence of Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha and Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman Vipin Kumar. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu addressed the event through a virtual platform and highlighted the importance of the new system in improving passenger convenience and strengthening India’s aviation network.
Under the newly introduced hub-and-spoke model, passengers travelling from Amritsar to international destinations through Delhi will be able to complete their check-in, baggage drop, immigration, customs clearance, and security checks at Amritsar Airport itself. This means passengers will not have to repeat these procedures after arriving in Delhi.
Once passengers land in Delhi, they can directly move to the security hold area and wait for their international flight. They will not need to collect and recheck their baggage, change terminals, or go through immigration and customs again. This will significantly reduce transit time and make connecting flights much smoother.
The new system is expected to save valuable time for passengers, especially those travelling to destinations in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and other international locations through Delhi. It will also reduce congestion at Delhi Airport by shifting several passenger processing activities to the departure airport.
The hub-and-spoke model is widely used by leading airlines and airports around the world. In this system, regional airports act as “spokes” that connect passengers to a major airport, known as the “hub,” from where they continue their international journeys. By introducing this model, the government aims to provide a more seamless and efficient travel experience.
Officials believe the initiative will encourage more international travellers from Punjab and nearby regions to use Amritsar Airport instead of travelling long distances to other airports before beginning their overseas journey. The improved passenger experience is also expected to boost tourism, business travel, and international connectivity in northern India.
The Airports Authority of India has stated that this model could be expanded to other airports across the country in the future if it proves successful. Similar facilities at more airports would improve connectivity and reduce travel inconvenience for millions of passengers.
The launch of the hub-and-spoke model at Amritsar Airport marks an important step in the modernization of India’s aviation sector. By simplifying travel procedures and offering a smoother transit experience, the initiative is expected to improve passenger satisfaction while strengthening India’s domestic and international air travel network.
