The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has intercepted an alleged attempt to smuggle foreign currency at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar. The incident took place on August 4, 2026, during security screening at the airport.
According to the CISF, security personnel recovered USD 31,500, which is approximately worth ₹30 lakh, from a departing passenger. The foreign currency was allegedly concealed inside the passenger’s undergarments.The CISF personnel were carrying out routine security checks at Amritsar airport when they detected the suspicious movement of the passenger. During the screening process, officials discovered the foreign currency hidden in the passenger’s undergarments.
A total of USD 31,500 was recovered from the passenger. The amount is equivalent to around ₹30 lakh based on the value mentioned by authorities.
The passenger was reportedly unable to provide valid documents or permission required for carrying and transporting such a large amount of foreign currency.After recovering the cash, CISF officials took further action against the passenger. The individual, along with the seized foreign currency, was handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
The DRI will now investigate the matter and determine the source of the foreign currency, its intended destination and the reason for carrying the money without the required documents.
The agency is also expected to examine whether the passenger was part of a larger foreign currency smuggling network or was acting alone.The recovery of USD 31,500 highlights the role of airport security agencies in preventing the illegal movement of foreign currency.
