Delhi airport is working with security regulators to make the security clearance process “less burdensome” for transfer passengers. These are travellers who change flights at the airport, especially those going from a domestic flight to an international one.

The statement came from S G K Kishore, Executive Director of GMR Airports, on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. GMR Airports is part of the group that runs Delhi airport.

Kishore said the airport has been working with the security regulators to see how transfer passengers can get a smoother security clearance. He mentioned domestic to international and domestic to domestic connections as the key areas.

Transfer passengers, who pass through the airport to catch another flight, make up around 30 to 35 per cent of Delhi airport’s annual traffic. This is a large share. It shows that the airport is not only a starting or ending point for journeys, but also a major connecting hub.

When a passenger changes flights, they often have to go through security checks again. This can take time and may cause stress, especially when the gap between two flights is short. Missing a connecting flight can mean extra costs and long waits.

An easier process could save time for travellers and reduce crowding at security areas. It may also help the airport compete with other international hubs, where passengers can change flights quickly.

The report did not give details of what changes are being considered. It also did not say when they might be introduced or which regulators are involved. Security rules are decided by authorities, so any change will need their approval and must not reduce safety.
