Six Afghan nationals have been arrested at Mumbai International Airport in connection with an investigation into allegedly fraudulent Indian passports and fake identities. The arrests were made between August 1 and September 22, 2026, according to the information provided.
Sahar Police have registered five FIRs in connection with the cases. Investigators are examining how the accused allegedly obtained Indian identity documents and passports despite being foreign nationals.
According to police, the accused had originally entered India using Afghan passports along with tourist or medical visas. Some of them allegedly remained in India even after their visas expired. Investigators later found that they were allegedly using documents linked to false identities to obtain Indian passports.
Police said the investigation uncovered discrepancies in the documents and personal details submitted by the accused. These reportedly included false places of birth, forged documents and identities that were allegedly created to obtain Indian citizenship-related documents and passports.
One of the arrested individuals has been identified as Niyaz Khan, 41. He was arrested on August 6. According to the investigation, Khan allegedly obtained an Indian passport in Thane in 2015 and another passport in Mumbai in 2025 by allegedly providing a false birthplace.
During the investigation, police reportedly recovered a counterfeit voter identity card and other documents from him. These documents are now part of the evidence being examined by investigators.
The arrests followed checks and investigations connected with passengers travelling through Mumbai International Airport. Authorities are now looking into the alleged network behind the preparation of the documents and how the accused were able to obtain them.
The case has raised questions about the misuse of identity documents and passport verification procedures. Police are also examining the travel history and immigration records of the arrested individuals.
