Lucknow Airport News: China Southern Airlines Flight Makes Historic First Landing After Kathmandu Weather Diversion

Lucknow Airport News

A China Southern Airlines aircraft made its first-ever landing at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow after being diverted due to bad weather in Kathmandu, Nepal. The unexpected landing took place on the night of July 26, 2026, highlighting how weather conditions can affect international flight operations.

The aircraft, operating as China Southern Airlines flight CSN-3067, was travelling from Guangzhou, China, to Kathmandu, Nepal. The flight departed Guangzhou at around 8:05 p.m. local time and was expected to land in Kathmandu later that night.

However, as the aircraft approached Kathmandu at around 10:35 p.m., the weather suddenly worsened. Poor visibility and unsafe flying conditions made it difficult for the pilots to continue with the landing. To ensure the safety of everyone on board, the flight crew decided to divert the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport.

The pilots contacted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow and requested permission for an emergency diversion. After reviewing the situation, the ATC granted landing clearance.

The aircraft landed safely at Lucknow Airport at approximately 11:36 p.m. Airport officials then guided the aircraft to the parking bay, where it reached at around 11:49 p.m.

During the stopover, all passengers and crew members remained inside the aircraft. Airport authorities provided the required ground support while monitoring weather conditions in Kathmandu. Since the diversion was only due to bad weather and not because of any technical issue, passengers did not leave the aircraft.

After waiting for nearly two hours, weather conditions in Kathmandu improved. Once the destination airport confirmed that it was safe for flight operations, the aircraft received permission to continue its journey. Around 2:00 a.m., the China Southern Airlines flight departed Lucknow and resumed its scheduled flight to Kathmandu.

Airport officials said this was the first time a China Southern Airlines aircraft had landed at Lucknow International Airport, making it a notable event for the airport. The successful handling of the diverted international flight demonstrated the airport’s capability to support unexpected international operations.

Weather-related diversions are common in the aviation industry, especially in mountainous regions like Nepal, where changing weather conditions can quickly affect visibility and flight safety. In such situations, pilots follow strict international aviation procedures and divert to alternate airports rather than attempting an unsafe landing.

The incident also highlighted the importance of coordination between pilots, air traffic controllers, and airport authorities. Their quick response ensured that the aircraft landed safely and continued its journey without any safety concerns.

The safe diversion and onward departure of the China Southern Airlines flight underline the aviation industry’s commitment to passenger safety, where operational decisions are always made based on weather conditions and international safety standards.
