Halwara Airport Welcomes Historic Maiden Flight, Opening New Growth Opportunities for Punjab

Halwara Airport
Punjab achieved a major milestone in aviation and infrastructure development as the first flight successfully landed at the newly built Halwara Airport near Ludhiana. The long-awaited airport is expected to greatly improve air connectivity in the region and provide a strong boost to Punjab’s industrial and economic growth.
The inaugural flight marked a historic moment for Ludhiana, one of Punjab’s largest industrial cities. Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu described the event as a landmark achievement for both Ludhiana and the state’s economy.
Sharing the news on social media platform X, Bittu said he travelled on the first flight along with Members of Parliament Vikramjit Sahni and Rajinder Gupta. He called the airport project a dream fulfilled after nearly 30 years of public demand.
According to Bittu, the new airport will provide major support to Punjab’s industries and open new opportunities for trade, investment, and exports. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the project and called the airport a “visionary gift” for Punjab.
Ludhiana is widely known as one of India’s major industrial hubs. The city is famous for industries such as textiles, hosiery, bicycle manufacturing, machine tools, and engineering products. For many years, business leaders and industrial groups had demanded a modern airport in the region to improve travel convenience and strengthen export activities.
Until now, many travelers from Ludhiana had to depend on airports in nearby cities for domestic and international travel. The operationalisation of Halwara Airport is expected to reduce travel time, improve business connectivity, and attract more investment into the state.
Industry experts believe the airport will help local manufacturers connect more efficiently with domestic and global markets. Better air connectivity may also encourage more companies to invest in Punjab’s industrial sector, creating jobs and supporting economic growth.
The airport is also expected to benefit people living in nearby districts by providing easier and faster travel options. Improved connectivity can support tourism, education, healthcare access, and business travel across the region.
The successful landing of the first flight has generated excitement among local residents and business communities, many of whom see the airport as an important step toward modernizing Punjab’s infrastructure.
The development comes at a time when the government is focusing heavily on improving transportation networks across India. Along with airport expansion, railway connectivity is also being strengthened.
Just one day before the Halwara Airport milestone, Ravneet Singh Bittu flagged off the Amrit Bharat Express from Amritsar Junction to New Jalpaiguri.
The Amrit Bharat Express is a modern non-air-conditioned train designed to offer affordable long-distance travel with better comfort for ordinary passengers. The train is expected to improve rail connectivity between Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.
Officials believe the new rail service will support tourism, trade, and regional development while making travel easier for thousands of passengers.
Together, the launch of Halwara Airport and the new Amrit Bharat Express reflects the government’s larger vision of improving transportation and connectivity infrastructure across northern India. Experts say these projects could play an important role in strengthening Punjab’s economy and supporting long-term development in the region.
