The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has foiled an alleged gold smuggling attempt at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. An international passenger was intercepted during routine security checks after CISF personnel noticed suspicious capsules concealed in his undergarment.
The passenger was travelling from Jeddah to Dhaka via Delhi when the security team stopped him at the airport on Saturday evening. During frisking, CISF personnel noticed three oval-shaped capsules hidden in the groin area of his undergarment.
The capsules were separated for further examination. According to the CISF, the contents appeared to be a gold-like substance. The recovered material was later examined by Customs officials at the airport.
Customs officials found that the material recovered from the capsules weighed approximately 1.597 kg. The estimated value of the gold was around Rs 2.4 crore.
The passenger was not allowed to continue his journey after the recovery. The CISF handed him over to Customs officials along with the recovered capsules for further legal action.
The authorities are now expected to investigate the circumstances of the alleged smuggling attempt and examine whether the passenger was carrying the gold for someone else.
The case highlights the methods allegedly being used by smugglers to conceal gold while travelling through airports. In this incident, the passenger reportedly tried to hide the gold inside three oval-shaped capsules placed in his undergarment.
The unusual shape and location of the concealed items were noticed during routine frisking by CISF personnel. The security staff then took immediate action and isolated the capsules for examination.
CISF officials said that security personnel at the airport are regularly trained to identify new and changing methods used to conceal gold and other prohibited items.
The CISF said that frisking and screening procedures at Delhi’s IGI Airport are carried out with close attention to detail. Security personnel are also regularly sensitised about emerging concealment techniques.
The latest seizure demonstrates the importance of physical screening in addition to other airport security measures. According to the CISF, smugglers are increasingly trying different methods to hide gold and contraband on their bodies or inside personal belongings.
The cooperation between CISF personnel and Customs officials helped ensure that the suspected smuggling attempt was detected before the passenger could continue his journey.
After the recovery, the passenger and the seized material were handed over to Customs officials. Further legal action will be taken according to the applicable procedures.
Authorities are likely to question the passenger and examine the source and intended destination of the gold. The investigation may also help officials determine whether other people were involved in the alleged operation.
The incident is another example of airport security personnel remaining alert to unusual concealment methods. With international passengers travelling through Delhi as a major aviation hub, agencies continue to closely monitor baggage and passengers to prevent the illegal movement of gold and other contraband.
