Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday unveiled a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Terminal 1 of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a significant cultural milestone for the state’s newest aviation gateway. The unveiling ceremony was held on the occasion of Shivrajyabhishek Din, commemorating the coronation of the legendary Maratha ruler.
The memorial has been installed as a tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership, courage, and enduring legacy. Airport authorities stated that the monument is intended to showcase Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage to millions of passengers traveling through the airport in the coming years.
The newly unveiled monument features a 20-foot bronze equestrian statue of the Maratha king, strategically placed within the airport premises to serve as a prominent landmark for travelers. According to officials, the statue was developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL) and took more than eight months to complete.
Speaking at the event, Fadnavis described the coronation day as a sacred occasion and highlighted its historical significance in the establishment of Hindavi Swarajya. He said the airport’s location in Raigad district, home to the historic Raigad Fort that served as the capital of Shivaji Maharaj’s kingdom, made it fitting for such a memorial to be installed at the site.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction that the project was completed within a relatively short period and congratulated the agencies involved, including airport authorities and infrastructure partners, for executing the initiative. He also expressed confidence that passengers arriving at or departing from the airport would draw inspiration from the statue and the values represented by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Several dignitaries, government officials, and airport executives attended the unveiling ceremony. The event further strengthened NMIA’s efforts to incorporate Maharashtra’s history and cultural identity into its infrastructure as it continues to expand operations and establish itself as a major aviation hub for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The installation of the statue is expected to become one of the airport’s most recognizable landmarks, offering visitors a glimpse into Maharashtra’s rich heritage while honoring one of India’s most respected historical figures.
