Bhogapuram Airport to Take Over Visakhapatnam Commercial Flight Operations

Bhogapuram Airport News
Commercial flight operations in Visakhapatnam are expected to move from the existing airport at INS Dega to the newly built Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) International Airport at Bhogapuram around mid-August 2026. The shift is likely to happen about two weeks after the official inauguration of the airport on August 1, 2026.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the new airport at 10 a.m. on August 1. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will also attend the event. The new airport is located in Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district and is expected to become a major aviation hub for the region.
The Bhogapuram International Airport has been developed with modern infrastructure to handle both domestic and international flights. One of its biggest highlights is its 3,800-metre-long Code 4E runway, which is among the longest runways in India. This runway is capable of handling large wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330, allowing airlines to operate long-distance international services in the future.
Before the start of commercial operations, the airport has successfully completed several important tests. Recently, Air India’s first trial flight landed safely at the airport, showing that the runway and airport systems are ready for regular flight operations. Airport authorities are now completing the remaining preparations, including safety checks, staff training, and passenger facility arrangements.
Once commercial flights shift from INS Dega to Bhogapuram, passengers can expect a better travel experience with modern terminal facilities, improved passenger services, larger parking areas, and advanced security systems. The new airport has also been designed to support future growth in passenger traffic and cargo operations.
The relocation of commercial operations will also help reduce operational limitations at the existing INS Dega airport, which functions as a naval air station. The new civilian airport will provide greater flexibility for airlines to increase flight frequencies and introduce new domestic and international routes.
The Bhogapuram airport project is expected to boost tourism, trade, and investment across Andhra Pradesh, especially in Visakhapatnam and nearby districts. Improved air connectivity is likely to attract more businesses, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the region’s economy.
With the inauguration scheduled for August 1 and commercial operations expected to begin around August 15, 2026, the Bhogapuram International Airport marks a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation development. Travelers can look forward to a modern airport that will enhance connectivity and support the state’s long-term economic growth.
