The departure area of Terminal 3 (T3) at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is getting a fresh new look. Around 40,000 square metres of carpet will be replaced, and the new design will be inspired by Indian heritage.

Officials aware of the plan said the new carpets will have colourful patterns that bring “rhythm and movement” to the long boarding-gate pier. This is the stretch of the terminal where passengers walk and wait before boarding their flights.

Colour will be a key part of the makeover. The carpets will use warm shades such as terracotta, rust, ochre and orange. These colours are meant to improve the look of the waiting areas and create a more pleasant and engaging space for travellers.

The new carpet design is called “Flow of Indian Heritage – A Journey in Colour”. According to an official, it reinterprets the richness of Indian crafts using a modern design style. In simple words, traditional Indian art and craft ideas are being shown in a fresh, contemporary way.

Different parts of the departure area will have different styles of patterns:

  • Queuing zones: Dense and colourful patterns will be used here. An official said this is meant to make waiting areas more interesting for passengers.
  • Boarding-gate stretch: Patterns will slowly change along the walkway. This will create a sense of visual flow from one end to the other.
  • End walls: Stronger, more concentrated colours will be placed near the end walls. A second person aware of the design said these will act as visual focal points, adding depth and breaking monotony.

The layout has been planned to suit the repeating sequence of boarding gates, which can look the same for a long stretch.

Airports are often busy and exhausting places. Passengers spend a lot of time walking, queuing and waiting. A well-designed space can make this experience feel less dull and more welcoming. By using colours and patterns linked to Indian culture, the airport also gives international visitors a brief taste of the country’s heritage as soon as they begin their journey.

The airport has not yet announced when the work will begin or be completed, but more details are expected in the coming days.
